This year world day against Child Labour is  being marked on 12 June 2016. This year theme of the day is “End Child Labour in Supply Chain”. According to International Labour Organization (ILO) 168 million children in all over world are involved in child labour in different supply chains of manufacturing, agriculture, construction and other industrial and domestic chores. Reportedly number of child labourers in Pakistan lies between 8 to 1O million. Child labour force is work force of workers below 14 years of age as the age of child is between 5 years to 14 years.

According to Constitution of Pakistan 1973, Article 11, child of below 14 years of age should be prohibited to participate in any kind of work, under hazardous environment also slavery and trafficking.

During these days our country isn’t only facing foreign policy and foreign security challenges but internal crises as well, child labour should be discouraged and right of education should be given to our future generation to make them competent enough to compete these challenges so they may lead our country towards prosperity and positive economic growth. If we don’t try to overcome this issue our country may face negative growth which can result in sending nation back to dark ages, despite of living in 21st century.

These children might have a dream to become Army, police officers, pilots, lawyers, doctors, educationists, journalists,IT professionals, politicians to play  their part in country’s growth. These kids need our firm support to achieve their goals or dreams they might have had seen for their future and their generations to come. Our little negligence can be catastrophic for their future so for the country’s prosperity.

Some children are made available for work force voluntarily by their own parents to fulfill their household requirements by teaching them that they are the bread-winner of family for survival. While in some cases parents especially in rural areas are compelled by their feudal lords to send their children  to  work for numerous reasons.

I personally witnessed one voluntarily act by one mother even in metropolitan Karachi  but unfortunately couldn’t do anything for that child for whom I had a dream to make him educated but her mother refused to take any kind of assistance which can be proven helpful in making his child educated. Ali was his name and he is only son of my previous house keeper. Which raised many questions in my mind how can a mother place hurdles in her child’s education? What kind of mind set it is? I have seen many parents crying and begging for half or full tuition fees discount for their children while some manage overtime at their work place.

Advc. Mr. Ali Palh, CEO, ‘Rights Now Pakistan’ answering my above mentioned query stated that,

“In current scenario when jobs are being sold and merit is not being respected, most of the middle class parents are not even thinking to let their children go to school but start business of cattle, fertilizer etc to earn.”

Advc. Abdullah Nizamani by putting took part in discussion and explained that,

“No parent would want their children to not study. Apart from some exceptional cases. Poor parents know pretty well if their kids are admitted in school, they wouldn’t be productive for the time being. Since they themselves are not well educated, that’s why they don’t know worth of education. Instead of educating their children, they prefer their kids to do something which could earn them something. If a child is left to study, even if someone generous bear the expenses, the parents would have to work extra hours to earn the money to compensate the monetary loss (which the kid would have earned for them)” concludes Nizamani.

Those parents who provide their children for child work force must be given counseling session by making them understand the worth of education. Those who take steps in compulsion must be given required legal assistance not for their children but for country’s future generation. Government must come up with proper mechanisms and implement proper rules and regulations for the sake of country’s prosperity. Civil Society must not hire children for domestic chores or as care taker of their kids.

Eradication of child labour is not solely the responsibility of Government but all of us. Join hands to discourage child labour and make our future generation educated not only by knowledge but vocationally as well.

Also, on this  special day to come on road with banners to stage demonstration and chant slogans against child labour ,organizing seminars, workshops wouldn’t be helpful till we take practical measures to get rid from child labour abuse by discouraging reasons behind the availability of minors for work place supply chain.
