Mian Tariq Mehmood, who has been accused of blackmailing former judge Arshad Malik, will soon be released on bail. He was arrested on July 17, 2019.

The Islamabad High Court approved his bail after finding insufficient evidence against him. Chief Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Aamer Farooq announced the verdict on Tuesday.

Mehmood will be released after submitting Rs100,000 surety bond.

The court said that FIA to failed to present sufficient evidence in the case.

Deputy Attorney General Tayyab Shah said that they have submitted the statements of the witnesses.

“You have nothing but witness statements against the suspect,” remarked Justice Farooq. He then asked who was being blackmailed in this case? And who was responsible for blackmailing?

Is there undeniable evidence that Mehmood was blackmailing the judge, the court asked. The FIA said that Malik’s domestic workers told them that Mehmood was blackmailing him.

The court then asked what did Malik say in his statement? Was the judge easily blackmailed? The court even asked if the FIA has seen the video of the judge.

The FIA investigating officer said that the judge was seen engaging in unethical activities in the video. On this, the chief justice remarked that the judge is then responsible for his own actions and no one else.

The court even asked for how long has Mahmood been in the jail? It was informed that he has been in Adiala Jail for 10 months now.

The FIA has accused Mehmood of shooting unethical videos of Judge Arshad Malik. The case came to light after PML-N leader Maryan Nawaz showed some videos of the judge in which he can be seen telling another person that the was pressured into convicting Nawaz Sharif in the Al Azizia mills case. The judge, however, denied the allegations.

On August 23, 2019 the Supreme Court ruled that the final decision in the Judge Malik case rests with the Islamabad High Court. It can choose whether to reopen the Al Azizia case or admit the video as evidence in Nawaz’s appeal against his sentence.
