If you can’t control the police, learn from me, Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar advised Sindh IG Dr Kaleem Imam on Thursday.
“The police are killing Karachiites. You cannot open fire like this in public places,” he said while referring to the recent killing of one-and-a-half-year-old Ahsan in an alleged police encounter near Safoora Chowrangi.
He said law enforcers have been given a freehand without any proper training. “They killed a toddler,” he said.
He said Dr Imam’s intelligence network is “zero”.
A day earlier, Dr Imam said the police is “sorry” about the killing of Ahsan. He said the police will ‘try its best’ to avoid such incidents from happening again. He was speaking to the media at the Karachi Arts Council on Wednesday.
Dr Imam apologised to Ahsan’s family and said efforts will be made to increase the training of policemen. He said he has instructed all officers about their duties.
Big weapons won’t be used by law enforcers, he said, adding that they will be trained to use small weapons.
“We are very sorry this has happened. We regret such incidents and are apologetic. We are saying sorry. We made a mistake,” he said.
He told the media to avoid exaggerating news as it would have a negative impact on the tourism and business industries of the country. The IG then went on to list the successful raids and encounters conducted so far by the Karachi police.
