A police officer was martyred and 17 people injured in an explosion reported outside the main gate of the University of Balochistan near Quetta's Saryab Road Monday afternoon.

According to Balochistan spokesperson Liaquat Shahwani, the injured people included four bystanders. "Explosives were planted on a motorcycle parked outside the varsity," he revealed.

Ziaullah Langove, the province's home minister, said that the blast targeted students protesting outside the university.

Security forces and police personnel have reached the site. The area has been cordoned off and a rescue operation is underway. Injured people are being moved to nearby hospitals.

The number of casualties and injuries are expected to increase because of the timing of the explosion. "The morning shift at the varsity ends at 4pm and a number of students gather outside the university waiting for their cars," SAMAA TV's Quetta correspondent Mujeebullah said.

An emergency has, on the other hand, been imposed at the Civil Hospital Quetta.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed took to Twitter and condemned the attack. The government has sought a report from the Balochistan IGP.

"We will not allow terrorists to destroy the province's peace. The federal government will provide resources and support to the provincial government," he promised.
