If the government gives students winter vacations this year, we will have to reduce summer vacations to little or none, Punjab Education Minister Murad Raas told SAMAA TV on Friday.

“I’m not in favour of giving winter vacations. Schools have just reopened after six months,” the minister said.

Raas says he will push his views in the NCOC meeting that will decide the students’ fate on Monday. But ahead of this, he will chair a meeting with heads of 36 Punjab districts to get their input.

The schooling will, however, not stop in case educational institutions are closed due to rising coronavirus cases. Students will be taught online and given homework.

“They just won’t go to schools physically… Everything else will remain the same,” Raas said.

He had a request for parents too. “Khuda ka wasta (for God’s sake), if you are not sending children to schools, don’t take them to northern areas or shopping malls instead,” he said.

“Schools are following COVID-19 SOPs the most and everyone wants them closed [as soon as virus surges]. I will ask the NCOC to ban children from entering all recreational spots.”

Pakistan is currently under a second wave of COVID-19. On Thursday, 37 people died while 2,738 known cases were confirmed.

On the other hand, Sindh will decide the matter on Saturday.

I appreciate education minister decision to Remain school open in Punjab. Already students have faced great loss in their studies. Now school administration are struggling hard to make up deficiency. I want to clear that school children are observing sop completely. And no single is died due to covid 19

Schools should be closed because we have atleast 15 to 20 cases in our school…. a few of my friends were effected and two of them were veru serious…. students lives are not jokes…. parhai baad main bhi ho sakti hay… jaan dobara nahi aai gi…. we are studying at home… but the school is still insisting on taking exams of 1st year and 2nd year… as if exams are top most priority even if students are getting infected…. This is just a joke to everyone…. bus parhai ka loss na ho baqi hum marain sarain kisi ko kia….

Being a teacher i suggest closure of educational institutions for 2 months i mean from December 1 to Jan 31 because the second wave of this pandemic seems to be much alarming. The decision makers shouldn’t confuse themselves rather they can simplify the matter by cutting 1 month from the next summer vacations and adding that to the coming winter vacations and giving just 15 extra days so the total sum will become 2 months. Being a father of 4 school going children i am not in favour of any other break in their educational career but at the same time i feel their lives to be more precious than schooling. We as teachers admit that the loss of their studies is so big but the loss of life is irreversible. To cut the matter short two months winter vacations for now and one and a half months summer vacations will not make any difference. At the same time schools administration should be ordered to give specific home work to their students for the vacations and with a letter to the parents advising them to bound and compell themselves as well as their children to do their homework promptly.
It was an honest suggestion and the choice is reserved with the government. We shall always obey the orders. Regards.
