Pakistan’s first ever public electric bikes launched

Travellers in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi will now be able to commute from metro stations to their final destinations after Roamer Technologies launched a bike-sharing service – ezBikes – on Wednesday.

Ali Moeen Malik, co-founder of Roamer, said people will first have to download the ezBike app and create an account. This account must be topped up before riding a motorcycle.

The user will be charged Rs5 for every minute and if they stop somewhere, for instance to buy something, then they can pause the electric bike. The rent will reduce to Rs2 per minute.

“There is no risk of this eco-friendly bike being stolen due to the security system. Arrive at your destination and park the bike anywhere. Your responsibility is over,” he said.

Initially, this electric bike will be limited to a few sectors. If it is taken out of the sector, the bike will stop automatically.

The entrepreneurs say they want to increase the scope of their start up across the country.

It is a great idea, that has been used in Europe and U.S for ages…..wonder why it never made it to Pakistan? Oh yeah, because the street urchins of Pakistani cities steal everything that is not tied down or tied down….doesn’t matter if it has a tracker they will sell it to some dealer and vanish while the dealer may be a criminal with connections to the criminal underworld and politicians thus untouchable by the law. Sadly the concept of having electric bikes just available for pickup. The concept is incredible and worth having in any city sadly it requires a degree of respect and responsibility on the part of the people who will use it. A mentality missing from our nation. the bikes will either be wrecked by the people who rent it through careless joyriding or they will just get stolen. It is a great idea that will, unfortunately, end up either shelved never to see the light of day or wind up in some walled theme park where at least security guards can keep track of potential thefts.
