Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has been granted interim bail till Tuesday on medical grounds in the Al-Azizia corruption reference by the Islamabad High Court.
The bail was approved after the National Accountability Bureau decided not to oppose it.
The court will hear Nawaz’s petition seeking suspension of his seven-year prison sentence in the Al Azizia Steel Mills case on Tuesday.
His younger brother, Shehbaz Sharif, had urged the court to hear the case on an urgent basis Saturday morning. According to PML-N’s Deputy Secretary General Attaullah Tarar, Nawaz suffered a minor heart attack last night (Friday).

NAB’s additional prosecutor-general told the court that the accountability watchdog had no objection if Nawaz is granted bail. We can’t oppose the bail on humanitarian grounds, he added.
The court has also directed the federal government to submit a report on ailing prisoners in the jail within two weeks.
It has asked the government how many prisoners have died in jail due to severe diseases.
Marriyum Aurangzeb, the spokesperson for the PML-N, thanked workers and supporters for praying for Nawaz Sharif’s health.
“Mian sahab’s treatment is underway,” she told reporters outside Lahore’s Services Hospital where her leader is currently receiving treatment. Nawaz’s platelet count is improving, she added.
The PML-N spokesperson said that Nawaz suffered a minor heart attack a night earlier. The doctors and medical board had presented the facts in court, she said.
The party hasn’t made any decision to shift Nawaz to any other medical facility from Services Hospital, she said.
