The government has prohibited the over-the-counter (OTC) sale of antibiotics without prescriptions in Islamabad.

Senior Inspector of Drugs Sardar Shabbir Ahmed imposed an immediate ban on the sale of all antibiotics and antibacterial drugs without prescriptions. He sent a letter to different pharmacies and medical stores.

He also instructed the pharmacists to adopt necessary measures and restrict the sale of such drugs. They should only sell the drugs after seeing the prescription of a registered medical practitioner and maintain a proper record too.

The letter said that the restriction had been imposed as the antimicrobial resistance has become a serious challenge to public health.

All public and private hospitals have been informed too. All doctors have been directed to issue proper prescriptions to their patients.
