The Sujawal police arrested three men Saturday night for trying to facilitate an underage marriage.

The marriage officiant, Maulvi Isa Khatti, managed to flee but the police arrested the groom Mir Hassan, the groom’s father Yar Muhammad and the girl’s maternal uncle Iqbal.

They were trying to get Hassan married to an 11-year-old girl.

The police stopped the marriage after receiving an tip-off. They say they will get a medical test conducted to confirm her age and present it before the court.

A case has been lodged against the suspects under sections 3 (punishment for male contracting party), 4 (punishment for solemnizing a marriage) and 5 (punishment for parent or guardian involved) of the Sindh Child Marriages Restraint Act and Section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

This is the first case of underage marriage lodged at the Sujawal police station since 1922.
