Police await forensics on Korangi govt hospital injection death

The police are waiting for lab reports on a syringe that was used to administer an injection that is suspected to have led to the death of a 26-year-old at the Sindh government hospital in Korangi.

The police hope that an examination of the syringe will help them ascertain the cause of death.

On Thursday, the victim Asmat left home and went to the hospital for a toothache. Her family said that she went for a routine dental check-up.

“She left at ten in the morning and at 1:30pm her mother received a call from Shahzaib that she is in critical condition,” Asmat’s cousin Jahangir told SAMAA Digital at her home in Ibrahim Hyderi on Saturday evening. He is referring to a man identified as Shahzaib who has since been taken into custody.

Awami Police Station’s Muhammad Sheraz is the investigating officer in this case. Asmat’s body was sent to Jinnah hospital for an autopsy. In the preliminary medico-legal assessment no injuries were found on her body.

The family has told the police that they believe Asmat died after she was given an injection. The police have registered a case and arrested three accused, Shahzaib, Aamir and a man identified as Wali. A fourth accused, the duty officer Dr Ayaz, is still at large.

Asmat’s family said that she knew the accused. She had worked at the hospital for a month as part of an NGO that was doing a campaign against TB, according to her brother Ghulam Muhammad. But she left that job over one and a half years ago. The hospital staff confirmed that she had worked at the hospital and had paid several visits to it since leaving her job. The two accused who are in police custody, Shahzaib and Wali, knew her because they worked for the same NGO.

The family is pointing to a lack of the regular paperwork trail. “We found no paper or any prescription in the hospital,” her cousin said, referring to the injection. “There should be a paper or hospital receipt.”

SAMAA Digital tried to contact officials at the hospital but they did not respond to queries. The MS at the hospital wasn’t available for comment.
