The Punjab police arrested a man on Monday for attempting to fly a small aircraft that he built in Pakpattan. He used the metal link road as a runway to take off on his maiden flight and took several rounds in the air before being arrested.The man says he can create and fly a plane if the government helps him.Mohammad Fayaz is a popcorn seller and part-time security guard. He designed the plane and built it using whatever supplies he could get his hands on. He also spent all his savings on his project.But the police arrested Fayaz and took his plane into custody. They also seized a generator, 12-watt battery and two plastic containers with 10 litres of petrol from the plane.They lodged an FIR against him for building an aircraft without a permit and for flying the plane without getting the permission from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).“He is not qualified to fly a plane; he even doesn’t have safety measures like a parachute to protect him,” said District Police Officer Maria.Related: Sindh police to recruit transgender people for the first time: inspector-general“He could have endangered hundreds of people in the area if his plane had crashed,” she said.“I made the aircraft with my hard work but instead of appreciating me I was handed an FIR. My plane can fly up to 1,000 feet,” said Fayaz.Give me one chance so that I can prove that I am a patriotic Pakistani, he urged. He told the media that he had informed all the relevant departments about his flight but no one responded to him.He claimed he could create and fly a plane if the government helped him.
