The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority has asked Channel 24 and its anchor Najam Sethi to air an apology for “propagating false news” about Prime Minister Imran Khan within seven days on its show Najam Sethi ke saath.
The channel has also been directed to deposit Rs1 million as a fine in favour of Pemra in seven days.
“In case of failure to comply with the above orders either in partial or as a whole, the programme titled ‘Najam Sethi ke saath’ shall remain prohibited for a period of thirty days,” read Pemra’s notice issued on Friday.
The authority stated that the decision was taken following a complaint lodged by Prime Minister Imran Khan at Pemra’s Council of Complaints.
The decision was taken under the terms outlined in Clause 18 of the Electronic Media (Programmes and Advertisements) Code of Conduct 2015, Pemra stated in its notification.
The notice did not, however, expressly mention the nature of the “false news”.
