A 10-year-old girl was set on fire in Bahawalnagar’s Fort Abbas tehsil by a fake faith healer (pir).

He was ostensibly trying to exorcise a jinn from the girl’s body with the permission of her parents.

When the child’s screams attracted people to the scene, the pir, idenfied as Saqlain Shah, fled.

The girl was referred to Bahwalpur’s Victoria Hospital in critical condition but doctors now say she is out of danger. She was burned on 10% of her body, a doctor told SAMAA TV. He said she had blisters on her forehead and neck.

The police say they have arrested Shah but failed to present him before the media.

The incident occurred in the Shehbazwala neighbourhood. The girl’s parents took her to the fake faith healer because she was sick. He told the family that there was a jinn in her and that it had to be exorcised.

Humara naseeb hee yeh hai [this is our fate],” her mother told the police.
