A bill was approved by the Punjab Assembly on Wednesday to double members’ salaries.
The MPAs’ basic salaries will increase from Rs18,000 to Rs80,000, under the new bill. Their net income will rise to Rs200,000 a month after including allowances and perks.
The members of the opposition and treasury benches united to speak up against their low incomes. In times of inflation, working as politicians is not easy, said one MPA.
“This is a good step as members of the treasury and opposition benches will be able to manage their daily expenditures,” said Punjab Energy Minister Akhtar Malik.
However, some residents of Lahore aren’t as happy with the step. The funds should be used to help the poor, rather than being divided among politicians, said some residents.
Others say it’s a positive step that will help reduce corruption, as politicians will be motivated to work for the people’s interests.
