PM Imran Khan announces national award for the Pakistani man who tried to tackle the Christchurch shooter

Prime Minister Imran Khan announced on Sunday a national award for the Pakistani who is being hailed as the hero of the Christchurch attacks in New Zealand.

Naeem Rashid risked his life to save others and tried to tackle the shooter, said the eyewitnesses. He can also be seen doing so in a video of the attack at the Al Noor mosque.

“Pakistan is proud of Mian Naeem Rashid who was martyred trying to tackle the white supremacist terrorist and his courage will be recognized with a national award,” said PM Khan in a tweet.

Nine Pakistanis were killed after a shooter opened fire at two mosques in Christchurch on Friday. At least 49 people were killed and 48 others injured in the attack. The shooter has been identified as 28-year-old Australian Brenton Harrison Tarrant.

“We stand ready to extend all our support to the families of Pakistani victims of the terrorist attack in Christchurch,” said Imran Khan.

Naeem Rashid was originally from Abbottabad in Pakistan. He was a teacher in Christchurch. His death was confirmed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and his family.

His brother, Khurshid Alam, said he was proud of his actions after seeing the video, reported BBC. “He was a brave person, and I’ve heard from a few people there, there were few witnesses… they’ve said he saved a few lives there by trying to stop that guy.”

“It’s a still a shock for us, whatever hero he becomes… it’s our pride now, but still the loss. It’s like cutting your limb off,” said Alam.

Naeem will be buried in Christchurch along with his 22-year-old son who lost his life in the shooting too.

    We are proud to be Muslim and Pakistani.Naeem was a brave person and rightly being awarded National Award.Nice and prompt step taken by Imran Khan.
