The Karachi police have not been able to conduct a forensic examination of the bullets used in the attack on Mufti Taqi Usmani.
Mufti Usmani’s car came under attack on Friday afternoon on Karachi’s Sharae Faisal. His guard and driver were killed when assailants opened fire on his vehicle, however, he remained unhurt.
Another car carrying Mufti Shahab of the Darul Uloom Korangi also came under attack in the same incident. Mufti Shahab and his guard were killed.
The police say that they will not be doing a manual forensic test on the bullets and instead, in the interest of accuracy, will be sending them for a digital bullet trajectory test. A new version of the test is being added to their system for this purpose.
The forensic division says their systems are being upgraded and it will take a day or two before they can conduct the test.
Sindh Inspector-General of Police Dr Kaleem Imam says they have obtained some important leads in the case and that they know who was behind the attack.
He said the investigation is proceeding swiftly and that they did not recall the security provided to anyone.
IG Imam reminded everyone that their officer was also killed in the attack. We will be helping his family, he said.
