A housing scheme announced by the Sindh government 15 years ago stands abandoned to this date

People have been lining up in long queues outside banks to obtain the forms of a low-cost housing scheme the Malir Development Authority announced this month. But it would probably be wise to be cautious and research before signing up.

An erstwhile housing scheme announced by the Sindh government 15 years ago stands abandoned to this date without the amenities of life. The current Scheme 45 does not have basic facilities of electricity, water and gas.

Former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf inaugurated the MDA’s low cost housing scheme in 2004. It spanned over 9,512 acres of land and offered 60,000 plots of different sizes.

Over 950,000 citizens submitted forms for the housing project. The development authority earned a whopping [non-refundable] Rs43 million from the sale of forms alone.

Nearly 58,000 citizens’ names were picked in the ballot. They submitted almost 90% of the price of their plots. So MDA has received nearly Rs7 billion from these 58,000 citizens who got themselves registered for plots in the scheme.

Despite pocketing almost total of the amount for the plots, MDA has yet to provide any facilities to the allottees.

Over 12 years have passed but there are no facilities, including power, water, gas, infrastructure, roads or a sewerage system here, said one of the allottees. The affected allottees question when MDA will move into action as the entire scheme wears a deserted look.

The old scheme offers a clear picture of the PPP-led government’s upcoming housing scheme and serves as a mirror for the new aspirants to view the future of this scheme too.

MDA’s previous housing projects, Scheme-45 Taiser Town Phase-I and New Malir Housing scheme have flopped. Not a single plot could be constructed in Scheme-45.

In the new housing scheme, citizens can get the ownership of plots ranging from 80 square-yards to 400 square-yards by taking part in balloting.

The government has set the price for 80 square-yard plots at Rs80,000; for 120 square-yard plots at 120,000; for 240 square-yard plots at 528,000; and, for 400 square-yard plots at Rs1,200,000.

It’s a long term investment for those, whom are looking for such type interest Free and safe.. Bcs it’s a government sponsored.

That is the main issue.. its government sponsored! and the working of government, credibility and corruption is very well known to everyone. Also to mention here, this project is sponsored by the provincial government NOT the federal government, so this is a very high risk of investment.

For overseas Pakistanis, I strongly recommend not to invest iyour hard earning money in Pakistan as the system of whole country in a state of disarray, full of curroption and it is highly likely that you will lose your money. Its better to invest in western countries property as they are more trust worthy and you wont regret investing there.

    We are amazing people!
MDA, with its failed project in hand, dared to announce another project with the same name. More amazingly, we are flocking up for the forms. Instead we, the old allotees, should gather in front of MDA for protest

Someone who have access to the organizations loyal with the country should communicate the concerns. A detailed audit of old and new schemes can pin point the corrupt people in the government. Supreme Court or High Court may also take notice of it. InshaAllah like Bahria Town, it will also be investigated sooner or later.
