In numbers: Punjab MPAs are paid the least while Balochistan lawmakers earn the most

Punjab MPAs want their salaries to be increased to Rs195,000

The debate over the salaries of Punjab MPAs has us all thinking how much money do they actually make and why do they want more?

SAMAA Digital dug into the matter and found that members of the Punjab Assembly are paid the least, while Balochistan MPAs are paid the most.

According to a comparative statement released on March 11, Punjab MPAs are paid Rs83,000 in total. The MPAs have asked for a Rs112,000 raise taking their total income to Rs195,000.

The proposal has asked for an increase in their take-home salary from Rs18,000 to Rs80,000, house rent for Rs29,000 to Rs50,000, office maintenance from Rs10,000 to Rs15,000, sumptuary allowance from Rs10,000 to Rs20,000 and utility allowance from 6,000 to Rs20,000.

A total of 295 MPAs were sworn into the Punjab Assembly on general seats. It has eight reserved seats for minorities and 65 reserved seats for women. This means there are a total of 368 MPAs.

Previously, the government was spending almost Rs30 million on just the salaries of the MPAs. The new proposal will take the amount to Rs71.7 million.

In Balochistan, the MPAs are paid the highest. Their total income is Rs440,000. They are also paid the highest (Rs50,000) for daily expenditure as compared to others.

The total number of MPAs is 65. This means that the government spends Rs28 million on their incomes.

Sindh’s 168 MPAs get paid Rs145,000, taking the total expenditure on their incomes to Rs24 million.

KP’s 124 MPAs are paid Rs153,800 every month. A total of Rs19 million is spent on their incomes.
