Another man has been critically injured
Five labourers died Saturday morning after the trolley lift they were in fell at an under construction building in Karachi’s Boat Basin.
Six labourers were transporting glass sheets in the lift and when they reached the 11th floor the lift fell. Five labourers died on the spot while the fifth one has been critically injured.
He has been taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. Three bodies were also taken to JPMC while two were taken to Civil Hospital.
JPMC Executive Director Seemin Jamali said the remaining worker is in bad condition
South SSP Pir Muhammad Shah said that the police are investigating what happened and why the lift fell. He said the labourers were all there to work on the building’s windows.
The police have collected evidence and are taking statements from witnesses.
They are also working to remove the rubble from the site.
SSP Shah said the cables used for lift were not in good condition. He also said that this lift only had the capacity to carry three people. There were six workers in the lift when it fell.
The responsibility to check whether the lift was in good condition and that safety measures are being taken at the site is the Sindh Building Control Authority’s. It is their job to make sure the proper procedure is being followed at construction sites.
