FIA sets up office in Greece to check human trafficking

March 4, 2019
It has been established on orders of the Supreme Court

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has established an office in Greece to check the activities of organised criminal networks and the illegal movement of Pakistanis.

FIA Additional Director Safiullah Jokhio has been posted to the Greece office.

The FIA office has been established on orders of the Supreme Court. It was inaugurated by the parliamentary leaders of Greece.

Jokhio said over 500 Pakistanis are jailed in Greek prisons. He said their release would be the office's first priority.

Last month, three suspected human traffickers were arrested during a joint raid by the Gujrat police and FIA. The suspects used to smuggle people to Greece and Turkey using illegal channels, according to the police.

According to sources in the FIA, they would charge young men exorbitant fees to get them to Turkey and Greece via land.

Earlier this year, a report by the FIA revealed that its own employees were involved in human trafficking.
