Fawad Chaudhry says Nawaz Sharif only wants to be treated in London

He said the media is blackmailing them over the Nawaz situation

Nawaz Sharif only wants to get treatment in London, Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said on Sunday at a press conference in Lahore.

He said that on January 16, the jail authorities had informed the Punjab government that the former premier was not well and was having problems breathing.

Professor Dr Shahid Hameed was deputed by the Punjab government to examine Nawaz’s health at a hospital. On his recommendation, Nawaz was taken to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology on January 22 for further medical examination. The same day, he was taken back to jail.

On January 25 a six-member board of doctors was formed by the Punjab government. The board met Nawaz on January 30 and advised that he should be shifted to the Services Hospital. He stayed there for six days and during that period, it was discovered that his blood sugar was too high and he also had issues in his liver.

Nawaz didn’t want to get treated in Pakistan and refused to get his angiography done, said Chaudhry.

The information minister said the PML-N founder was later admitted to Jinnah Hospital on February 14 because of the specialized cardiologists and other doctors available there.

A coordination team was formed, which included urologists and cardiologists.

The Punjab government went out of their way and emptied a whole ward and shifted the furniture from the consultant’s room to turn the ward into a room for Nawaz, claimed Chaudhry.

However, he said that whatever the facilities provided to the Sharif brothers were rejected. The spokesperson of the Punjab government, Dr Shahbaz Gill, met Nawaz twice and assured him that all medical facilities will be provided to him.

He said the jails IG went to Nawaz himself to give him the home department’s letter saying that he can fly in whichever doctor he wants and be treated at any hospital he wants in Pakistan. Apart from this, Chaudhry said that a special cardiac unit had been set up at the Kot Lakhpat Jail for Nawaz but he hasn’t even let the doctors speak once.

The information minister also said that he has offered Nawaz a plea bargain. Nawaz should send a request to NAB, he said.

If the PML-N wants to play politics, it is their choice, he said. He claimed that they were being blackmailed by the media regarding Nawaz’s situation. He also claimed the Sharif family was trying to pressure the government to allow Nawaz to be treated in London.
