Fawad Chaudhry will continue working as the minister for federal information and broadcasting, says Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Media Affairs Yousaf Baig Mirza on Thursday.
In a statement issued today in Islamabad, the PM’s media adviser ruled out rumours that PTI leader Babar Awan is being assigned the portfolio of the information ministry in Chaudhry’s place.
Some sections of the media published reports that the information ministry’s portfolio will be taken away from Chaudhry and he will be assigned another ministry.
Dr Awan also denied such media reports. “The reports that I am being given responsibility of the information ministry are not correct,” said Dr Awan in his media talk after he called on Prime Minister Imran Khan today.
“I met Imran Khan but his [Chaudhry’s] replacement wasn’t discussed with me.” He said only legal and constitutional affairs were discussed during the meeting.
On February 23, Chaudhry said he had directed the inspector-General of Islamabad police to investigate reports that the Managing Director of Pakistan Television transferred Rs4.8 million from the state TV’s bank account.
Later, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Political Affairs Naeemul Haque said in a series of tweets, “The Prime Minister has full confidence in the Board of PTV and its management and believes PTV should be an independent organisation like BBC and the government will take all steps necessary towards that end.”
Both the PTI leaders are in disagreement over managing-director of PTV Arshad Khan, who Chaudhry believes, should resign from his post himself.
Chaudhry pointed out that the way the PTV’s affairs are being run, it is destined to be closed. Hence, it is needed that its affairs are handled forthwith, he said.
All reports regarding my resignation are baseless, said Fawad Chaudhry on February 24, a day after Haque claimed that he [Chaudhry] had sent his resignation to the premier.
The same day, Senate Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting Chairperson Senator Faisal Javed Khan said the matter regarding the PTV MD is under Prime Minister Imran Khan’s review. “We didn’t recommend removing Arshad Khan as the state television’s administration didn’t come,” he said. “The matter will be discussed in the next meeting of the committee.”
