Dr Shahbaz Gill, the spokesperson of the Punjab chief minister, went to Kot Lakhpat Jail to visit PML-N founder Nawaz Sharif on Sunday.
Two cardiologists, the chief executive of the Punjab Institute of Cardiology, Professor Dr Saqib Shafi and Professor Dr Nadeem Malik, accompanied Gill on the visit. Both doctors also examined him.
They recommended a slight change in his prescription. They also recommended the authorities provide exercise equipment to the former premier. Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar sanctioned the same for him.
A day earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan directed CM Buzdar to provide the best medical facilities to the former premier.
The prime minister asked the CM to ensure that every healthcare facility is made available so that Nawaz gets the treatment of his choice. “The federal government will assist wherever required,” said PM Khan in a tweet on Saturday. “I wish him good health.”
The premier’s offer came after Nawaz turned down the Punjab government’s treatment offer despite his own family insisting that he be given it.
Nawaz is serving a seven-year term at the Kot Lakhpat Jail in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference. An accountability court awarded him the sentence last December.
He was also convicted in the Avenfiled reference, however, he was granted bail by the Islamabad High Court until his final appeal is heard.
He moved the Islamabad High Court for bail on medical grounds in the Al-Azizia reference but, his plea was rejected last month. He has now petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn the verdict.
