Balochistan voters head to the polls for by-elections in PB-5, NA-258

Voters in Balochistan are heading to the polls today (Thursday) to elect an MNA and MPA. The by-election on PB-5 Duki and NA-258 Loralai-Musakhel-Ziarat-Duki-Harnai began at 8am and will continue till 5pm.

Over 2,000 personnel of the police, Frontier Constabulary and Levies have been deployed.

There are 52,579 registered voters – 30,034 men and 22,545 women – who will cast their votes.

Duki Deputy Commissioner Abdul Nasir Dotani said there are 75 polling stations where people will vote in the PB-5 election and 23 where they will vote in the NA-258 election. All the polling stations have been declared sensitive.

Dotani said that four CCTV cameras have been installed at each polling station.

The by-election is being held because losing candidates challenged the results in the ECP. They say there was rigging in the July 25 election.

Sardar Yahya Khan Nasir challenged the PB-5 results, while Sardar Dur Muhammad Nasir of the BAP challenged the NA-258 results. Sardar Masood Khan Loni, an independent candidate who later joined the BAP, was earlier declared victorious from the PB-5 constituency, while BAP’s Sardar Israr Tareen was declared victorious in NA-258.  Loni is contesting the election once again as an independent candidate.

On October 5, the ECP had announced that there would be re-polling in the entire PB-5 Duki constituency and re-polling at 23 polling stations of NA-258.
