At least 350 shops have been demolished
After clearing out the illegal constructions around Empress Market, the Karachi anti-encroachment drive has moved to Arambagh and Lighthouse.
Around 350 shops have been demolished. Over 296 shops located near the Lighthouse nullah will be removed under the supervision of police and Rangers.
On Sunday night, the development authority announced the operation on loudspeakers and instructed the shopkeepers to move their merchandise. However, the shopkeepers who refused were given an additional two-hour deadline before the operation started.
Of the total 646 shops, only 170 shops were allotted legally by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.
The anti-encroachment drive began after the orders of the Supreme Court. The drive aims to restore Karachi to its former glory by removing encroachments that are not just an eyesore, but also disrupt traffic and leave little space for pedestrians.
