Karachi police can’t ask couples to show nikkahnamas any more

October 10, 2018

Karachi police chief Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh has directed his force not harass and humiliate couples by demanding their nikkahnama (wedding certificate).

In a written order, the AIG said that, “There is a general complaint that policemen in police vans, and on motorcycles harass and humiliate couples by asking them to show their nikkahnama” to prove that they are married.

Dr Shaikh told the DIGs to issue strict instructions to subordinate staff. “In the future, such complaints shall not be tolerated and action against supervising officers will also be initiated,” he warned.

Couples are harassed by the police when they go out. The police at Sea View are particularly notorious for shaming couples and demanding bribes to release them.
