Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday urged overseas Pakistanis especially those living in Europe and the United States to send $1,000 each to help with the construction of dams.
The prime minister was addressing the nation.
He also urged Pakistanis working in the Middle East and other countries to contribute to the fund according to their capacity.
The overseas Pakistanis have always stood by me in the past and supported my initiatives of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital and Namal College, PM Khan added.
“I promise to protect every penny of your hard earned money,” the PM said.
If we have the funds, we will be able to construct the dams in five years, he said, adding that if we do not construct these dams, Pakistan will face severe droughts by 2025.
PM Khan said that the country has an average water storage capacity of only 30 days, as compared to 190 days of India and 1000 days for Egypt.
Rs1.8 billion has already been raised for the construction of dams, he added.
The prime minister announced that the prime minister’s fund for dam construction and the chief justice’s fund will be merged.
