Former Senate chairperson Raza Rabbani has advised Prime Minister Imran Khan not to meet US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during his visit to Pakistan on September 5.
“Secretary Pompeo’s meeting with the premier is against protocol. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi should meet him instead,” Rabbani said while talking to the media on Monday.
He added that this is the second time the US has suspended funds meant to repay Pakistan for money spent on the war against terror. “Pakistan is not taking any aid from the US,” said Senator Rabbani. The suspension could freeze up to $1.3 billion, although the US hasn’t specified the exact amount.
Rabbani also expressed concern about the transcript of the Imran-Pompeo telephonic conversation being made public and regarded it as ‘putting pressure on Pakistan’.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal had called the mentioning of terrorism within Pakistan during the call factually incorrect in a tweet posted on August 23. The US said that fighting terrorism within Pakistan was discussed during the phone call.
