Move over K-Electric, meet R-Electric

September 6, 2018

Illegal ‘companies’ are offering power connections for Rs1,000 in Ahsanabad and its surrounding areas in Karachi.

R-Electric has become the main power supplier in Allah Bux Goth neighbourhood of Ahsanabad. It has supplied as many as 700 power connections to the residents.

B-Electric is another such company which has provided at least 800 connections to the people in Sabzi Mandi.

The people living here say that they bought the connections as the employees of these companies assured them that they work with K-Electric, the city’s sole power utility.

NEPRA law states that only KE has the licence to distribute and sell power connections in the city.

“R-Electric is an illegal company. It steals electricity from KE and sells it,” said the KE spokesperson M Khayyam Siddiqi while speaking to SAMAA TV. “Not only is this illegal but dangerous too. All the illegal companies need to be dismantled

An investigation was launched last year.

The company keeps trying to crackdown on Kunda connection but the people protest.

“People come out on roads and stage protests. A few days later, the connections are put up again,” said Siddiqi.

Siddiqi said that no employee is involved in the operations of illegal power companies.  “If KE were involved then why would we launch an investigation?”
