Top court orders by-election in Rawalpindi’s NA-60

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court ruled that the election process will begin from scratch in NA-60

The Supreme Court nullified on Wednesday the election commission’s decision to postpone the election on Rawalpindi’s NA-60 seat and ordered the election regulatory body to hold a by-election instead.

The top court was hearing Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed’s plea against the delay in the NA-60 election. Rasheed was contesting the election from NA-60. The ECP had postponed the polls on the Rawalpindi seat after a high court disqualified PML-N leader Hanif Abbasi, another contender for NA-60, from contesting the elections.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court ruled that the election process will begin from scratch in NA-60. All the nomination papers that had earlier been filed for contesting from the constituency stand cancelled, said the court.

“I have forgotten what the election commission did to me,” Rasheed said during the hearing. He said that he lauded Chief Justice Saqib Nisar’s efforts to hold the election at a time when no one thought they would be held on time.

“People say that I have sided with Sheikh Rasheed,” remarked the top judge, to which Rasheed replied that the CJ has sided only with the people.
