Shehbaz, Zardari skip opposition protest against ‘rigging’

August 8, 2018

The PML-N and the PPP have joined hands against the PTI, but not for a joint protest.

The opposition parties held a protest on Wednesday outside the Election Commission’s office in Islamabad against, what they called was rigging in the July 25 general elections.

Election candidates of the PML-N, PPP, MMA, ANP and PkMAP participated in the protest.

They were addressed by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazl Urrehman, PPP’s Sherry Rehman, PML-N’s Raja Zafarul Haq, former Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani and others.

PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif had to join the protest, but they did not turn up, raising questions over the alliance of the two opposition parties in the National Assembly.

Leaders from both the parties cited contradictory reasons for Sharif and Zardari’s absence, the two old foes who have joined hands to derail Imran Khan’s election as prime minister.

The opposition parties, including PPP and PML-N, have announced that they would field their own candidates against Imran Khan. They have also announced that they will contest the election of speaker and deputy speaker.
