The Supreme Court will only look after the funds collected for the dams and the government will build it, said Chief Justice Saqib Nisar.

“It is not the court’s job to build the dams,” remarked the top judge on Wednesday. “It’s the government’s job. The Supreme Court will only keep an eye on the funds.”

He was hearing the Katas Raj pond depletion case. The Katas Raj temples in Chakwal are among the holiest sites in Hindu mythology. It is said that the Katas Raj pond was formed after Hindu deity Shiva’s wife died and he cried inconsolably. His tears accumulated to form a pond. Later, temples were built around the pond.

The top court took suo motu notice of the pond drying up. It is said to have depleted due to several cement factories operating in the area that have sucked up the underground water. In May, the CJ wrapped up the case after the factory owners assured the court that they will look for alternative water sources and pay for water use.

Irked by the non-implementation of its orders, a Supreme Court bench took up the case once again and reprimanded the cement factories for wasting potable water.

At a previous hearing, the CJ had noted that the factories were consuming water worth millions of rupees without paying their dues. On Wednesday, he said that a price will have to be fixed for water in order to prevent wastage.

The case was adjourned for an indefinite period.
