A fire broke out at the Sasta Bazaar in Islamabad’s G-9 sector at around 12pm on Wednesday, engulfing over half the shops in the market.
As of 1:30pm, there were no casualties reported since there weren’t that many people at the bazaar, which is located near the Kashmir Highway.
According to SAMAA TV correspondent Adil Tanoli, the local police said they still did not know the cause of the fire.
Loud bangs were heard inside the market when the UPS and generator batteries at the stores exploded.
The fire department sent six fire trucks to the scene but they were unable to control the blaze. Vehicles from Rescue 1122 and the Quick Response Force also arrived.
Over 250 stores were completed gutted. Shop owners were seen trying to salvage their stock by carrying it to safety. Some also tried to help the fire brigade put out the blaze. Most of the stores that caught fire were leather and clothing stores.
This is not the first time the bazaar has caught on fire. Last year, a deadly blaze also spread through the market.
