Riding a donkey cart is not a matter of insult for Larkana’s Liaquat Mirani. He has to reach out to the middle-class voters and he knows the metaphor of the beast of burden well.

Mirani is vying for PS-13 as an independent candidate from Dokri town of Larkana.

“You people are very lucky to have a poor candidate like me,” he says into the megaphone, riding through Larkana’s main bazaar.

Mirani, a social worker, wants a revolution. He is challenging feudal lords in a historic city known for giving rise to the Pakistan People’s Party.

Mirani is an educated person and says he comes from a middle class family.

“All the waderas (feudal elements) who have been elected for decades have ruined this nation. They haven’t done any development. Instead, they take their share from contractors in the budget.”

“Please vote and support me,” he said.

For the PS-13 seat, Mirani is in tough contest with the PPP’s Sardar Hizbullah Bughio and GDA’s Adil Altaf.

“A poor man of society should be given a chance this time. He’s striving for the welfare of the public, and we, the youth, will support him,” said a youngster, who said he supported Mirani.
