A 10-year-old girl was killed and at least 16 others were injured Sunday when a ride collapsed in Karachi’s Askari Amusement Park, SAMAA reported.
Hundreds of visitors were present in the newly inaugurated park when the incident occurred.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene and pulled the injured from the fallen ride. The injured were taken to Jinnah and Civil hospitals.
The cause of the swing’s collapse could not be ascertained immediately. An eyewitness who spoke to SAMAA said the swings were overloaded.
Mayor Karachi Waseem Akhtar has demanded inquiry into the incident, saying that the park was made operational without a test and safety measures.
“I don’t know who is overseeing the affairs of this park. It was earlier operated by KMC and then we handed it over to cantonment,” he said while speaking to SAMAA TV.
"This is the park administration's mistake. They should not have allowed children to take rides," he said.
The park was inaugurated on Eid-ul-Fitr in June.
Meanwhile, caretaker Chief Minister Fazlur Rehman took notice of the incident, ordering authorities to file an inquiry report within three days.
He directed health officials to provide all health facilities to the injured. the CM expressed his grief and sorrow over the loss of the girl's life.
