An applicant has challenged the candidacy of former PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi for NA-53 with the Islamabad High Court.
According to the applicant, Abbasi is no longer ‘sadiq’ and ‘amin’ since he has been disqualified from contesting the election from NA-57, Murree. He said that the court should bar him from contesting the elections from NA-53 as well.
The move comes two days after an election tribunal disqualified the former PM disqualified from holding public office for life.
Abbasi was disqualified for not declaring his assets in the papers he filed for his home constituency in Murree, NA-57. The eight-page verdict, issued by Justice Ibadur Rehman Lodhi, declared that Abbasi is not eligible to become a member of Parliament under Article 62 (1) (F) of the Constitution as he is not sadiq and amin.
The verdict says Abbasi declared the value of his F-7/2 house in Islamabad as Rs0.3 million to obtain a loan of Rs25 million. He also did not declare his assets in the nomination papers, which is a clear violation of the oath Abbasi took as PM, the ruling stated.
