General election to cost Rs20b: ECP

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday released estimates of the various costs of the 2018 general elections.

Out of the total Rs20 billion that the ECP estimates will be spent on the election, an estimated Rs6 to 7 billion will be spent on the salaries of election officers, while Rs1 billion has been allocated for security and another Rs1 billion for transport.

The commission stated that Rs2.5 billion is likely to be spent on the purchase and printing of ballot papers whereas the estimated cost of the “special featured ballot papers” will be more than Rs1 billion.

For context, the actual costs of the 2008 and 2013 general elections were Rs1.85b and Rs4.73b, respectively, not adjusting for inflation.
