Top court summons Nawaz, Maryam over “anti-judiciary speeches”

The Supreme Court took suo motu notice of the “anti-judiciary speeches” of former PM Nawaz Sharif and his daughter, Maryam Nawaz and issued summons.

The Lahore High Court had directed Monday the electronic media watchdog to monitor “anti-judiciary speeches” and decide on complaints filed against Mr Sharif, his daughter and other leaders of the PML-N. Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) was directed to decide on the complaints within 15 days.

On Tuesday, Chief Justice Saqib Nisar summoned a record of complaints against the speeches of PML-N leaders filed with Pemra. The court also summoned the attorney-general (AG) of Pakistan as well as advocate-generals of all four provinces and registrar Lahore High Court.

The hearing was scheduled for 1pm. The three-member bench ordered Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz to appear in person or via their counsel before the court during the next hearing.

“It is very important for all parties to be represented in a case,” said the CJP. “We’ll sit here till 8pm. We’ll start the hearing at the time that suits you.”

The attorney-general said he will inform the court after checking with his clients about their availability, to which the CJP said that they do not have to appear in person.
