People in Karachi suffered as a religious party blocked the main Sharae Faisal for over an hour.

The Jamaat-e-Islami was protesting the water and power crises in the city. Party workers blocked the road at Malir 15. Karachi Transporters Ittehad also joined them.

“We haven’t blocked any road,” said the party’s Karachi chief, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman. “We are not causing trouble to the passers-by. Our protest is peaceful.”

The JI Amir, Sirajul Haq, called upon the people of Karachi to respond to the party’s strike call. “The strike has been called to pull Karachi out of darkness,” he said.

People at the protest venue said load-shedding and water scarcity issues must be resolved but a strike is not the solution. “We support the protest, not the strike,” they said.

Later in the day, Rehman told the traders to open their shops after Friday prayers. “The strike is over but the peaceful protest will go on.”

Most parts of Karachi experienced unprecedented power cuts as a dispute emerged between the gas and electricity utilities in the city. As a result, water also ran short. Different political parties have protested the protracted power and water crises.

This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.
