LODHRAN: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Ali Khan Tareen on Tuesday blamed overconfidence for his party’s upset defeat in the by-election of Lodhran.
Tareen, son of PTI’s General Secretary Jahangir Khan Tareen, lost to PML-N candidate Pir Iqbal Shah with a big margin of 26, 200 votes.
“We started our campaign only 20 days ago and my workers thought it would be a walkover,” admitted junior Tareen while speaking on SAMAA’s show ‘Nadeem Malik Live’.
“We failed to mobilize our voters and workers due to overconfidence that it would be a comfortable victory,” he said. “We still managed to bag 90, 000 votes. Who gets that many votes in a by-election?”
The young politician from South Punjab said that he would rectify his mistakes and come back stronger in the next general elections.
To a question about Nawaz Sharif’s ‘mujhe kyun nikala’ campaign, he said that voters in rural constituencies don’t care much about the national level politics and decide to vote for a candidate on the basis of the development work at the grass root level.
“We won the last by-election as voters were not satisfied with the performance of the PML-N government,” he said. – SAMAA
