IHC to hear petition seeking ban on airing Nawaz Sharif’s speeches today

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court will conduct the hearing of a petition on Tuesday that seeks to have a ban placed on the airing of speeches by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

After being disqualified by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the former prime minister has been making incendiary speeches in which he has targeted senior judges of the apex court.

Petitioner Advocate Makhdoom Niaz Inqalabi has requested Islamabad High Court to ban speeches of Nawaz Sharif as he has criticised them severely during the past couple of months.

After being disqualified by the Supreme Court of Pakistan in July 2017, the former prime minister has been announcing at various rallies across the country that he would restore the ‘sanctity of the vote’ and has time and again hinted that there is a judiciary-backed conspiracy against him in the works.

Senior PML-N leader Nehal Hashmi was a couple of weeks ago disqualified for five years by the apex court, sentenced to one-month imprisonment and fined Rs 50,000.

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry was also issued summoned by the apex court last week to answer for speeches he made in which he hit out at the judiciary.
