ISLAMABAD: The request of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan to disqualify Khyber Pakhtunkhwa MPA Ziaullah Afridi has been rejected by the Election Commission of Pakistan on Thursday.

In its verdict that the ECP reserved on January 31, the Election Commission declared Afridi qualified to hold the provincial assembly seat.

In his petition, Imran Khan said Ziaullah Afridi had joined Pakistan People’s Party (PPP); hence, he cannot remain in the assembly on a seat that he obtain on PTI’s ticket.

The three-member ECP bench held Afridi eligible as he submitted before the court that he was evicted from the party on raising voice against the corruption of CM KPK Pervez Khattak, adding, “At the time, I had not joined any party.”

The PTI-led provincial government dismissed Ziaullah over charges of corruption in his department.

Ziaullah announced to join the PPP in August 2017 after meeting the party’s co-chairperson, Asif Ali Zardari.

However, before joining the PPP, Ziaullah levelled charges of corruption against Pervez Khattak and Finance Minister Muzaffar Said.  –Samaa
