As the year nears its end, it is only befitting that we have a lookback at some statements or incidences that went viral over the course of this year. From sexual harassment allegations to Kohli’s inability to chase (as shouted by a Pakistani fan) here are the top 10 moments that created a stir on social media in 2017…

1. Mujay Kyun Nikala?

As if Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification didn’t provide us with enough memes that did the rounds on social media, Mian sahib’s Mujhay Kyun Nikala rant became feverishly popular on social media. I guess it’s safe to say that this was arguably the most popular video clip of 2017 on Twitter, Facebook and Whatsapp.

2. Ayesha Gulalai’s allegations of sexual harassment

A few days after Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification, estranged PTI leader Ayesha Gulalai came forward with shocking allegations against party chairman Imran Khan.

Gulalai alleged that Imran Khan sent her lewd text messages and had been harassing her since 2013 when she first joined the party.

3. All hell broke loose when Mahira Khan and Ranbir Kapoor were snapped smoking in New York

Mahira Khan received much flak on the internet when her pictures of smoking with Ranbir Kapoor in New York surfaced on social media.

The Verna actress was also called out by Pakistani Twitterati for the dress she was wearing when her pictures were taken.

Many celebrities came out in support of Mahira and slammed critics for their apparent hypocrisy at slut-shaming the actress for being a woman but being comparatively silent when pictures of male celebrities surfaced.

4. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and the AKUH doctor fiasco…

When Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy called out a doctor in one of her tweets for allegedly sending her sister a friend request on Facebook, Agha Khan University Hospital proceeded to suspend the aforementioned person.

A furore stirred up on social media as people demanded Sharmeen apologise for allegedly abusing her celebrity privilege against the doctor. Ultimately, the issue died down as the Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker refused to talk about it any further.

5. The Trumpoo song…

This song came out of nowhere on social media and became instantly popular. A couple of Pakistani students thought it best to come up with a rendition.

Needless to say, this song also made headlines and piqued the interest of the masses. This came in the wake of Trump’s criticism of Pakistan and his demand for the country to ‘do more’.

6. Kohli, Nahi Hota Tujse Chase…

When Pakistan was smashing India for boundaries left, right and center at the final of the Champions Trophy 2017, one Pakistani fan said a sentence that went viral over the internet.

Kohli, nahi hota tujse chase!”

7. Zardari’s dance at PPP’s Islamabad rally caught everyone’s eye

We’ve seen Kaptaan groove to PTI songs during the dharna days but Asif Ali Zardari always remains composed. However, during PPP’s foundation day last month, the party’s co-chairman could not hold back from grooving and did the bhangra to everyone’s delight.

8. Malala Yousufzai slut-shamed for wearing denims

Malala Yousafzai received invective from internet trolls and the moral police after a picture of her walking in London sporting denim jeans surfaced. The activist was slut-shamed for wearing denims by internet trolls who accused her of dressing inappropriately.

9. Dhinchak Pooja

It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Dhinchak Pooja is the Tahir Shah of India. The same quirky vibe and the amateurish lyrics nevertheless enabled her to become feverishly popular across India and Pakistan with hits such as Dilon Ka Shooter and Selfie Mene Le Li.

10. Waqar Zaka

Okay–this inspired the most parody videos in Pakistan. News (and footage) of Waqar Zaka being beaten up by a person in the presence of armed guards outside a popular cafe in Karachi spread like wildfire.

Boss Menay Apko Bola Kya Hai was what Waqar could say after mustering up all the courage he could in the face of such adversity. This line ultimately became everyone else’s favourite and spawned countless memes as well as gif images.
