KARACHI: Protesting farmers and police clashed on Monday in Karachi roundabout after the former attempted to reach Bilawal House.

Police used water cannons to disperse farmers who were on their way to Bilawal House to register their protest over the prices of sugercane.

The farmers were chanting slogans against the government and marching towards Bilawal House when police baton charged the crowd.

The two roads leading towards Bilawal House from boat basin (where the clash took place) were blocked by police vehicles and buses for security reasons. Traffic was severely hampered by the clash.

The farmers have been protesting over the rate that has been set by the government for sugercane.

They have also been demanding from the government to ensure timely start of the sugarcane crushing season by the sugar mills and announce fixed price for 2017-18.

The growers were assured that they would be given government approved rates of their crop. Other farmers have also protested over claims that they were not being issued Cane Purchase Receipts (CPRs).
