Will Chaudhry Nisar part ways with the PM?

NEWS DESK: Throughout the Panama Papers controversy that the PM has remained embroiled in for the past few months, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has remained strangely coy. Rumours are abuzz that he will part ways with the PML-N and resign.

In such times, Chaudhry Nisar’s highly anticipated press conference has all eyes on it. It has been postponed till Monday due to Nisar’s health issues.

According to TV channels, federal ministers Saad Rafiq, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Rana Tanvir Hussain met Chaudhry Nisar on Saturday to persuade him to cancel his press conference where, the channels claimed, he would announce an end to his 35-year association with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. This was the only news report about him in recent days that was not rebutted by the interior ministry.

The interior minister last made a brief appearance in the cabinet’s meeting on July 13 and left early.

Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal quoted Chaudhry Nisar referring to his 35 year-long association with PM Nawaz and describing his loyalty as an asset he was proud of in his political journey.

An hour later, a spokesman of interior ministry disputed the minister’s remarks, saying that nothing unpleasant happened and Chaudhry Nisar did not walk out of the cabinet meeting.

“We should avoid speculations and unrealistic comments with regard to remarks of interior minister during Cabinet meeting held on Thursday,” he said in a statement. There was no validity or truth in news telecast on some media channels in this regard, he added.

The spokesperson said Chaudhry Nisar could not attend the parliamentary party meeting of PML-N due to personal engagements, adding that he was unable to attend several parliamentary party meetings earlier as well.

Chaudhry Nisar will break his silence in today’s press conference at 5pm. Let’s wait and see what he says.
