Umerkot doctor accused of refusing treatment to sanitary worker arrested

UMERKOT: Police arrested the Medical Superintendent of Umerkot’s Civil Hospital on Friday in connection with the death of a sanitary worker who was denied timely treatment at the government-run health facility.

Irfan Maish, a sanitary worker in Umerkot, and his three fellow workers fainted due to suffocation while cleaning a manhole at Chhore Road yesterday.

They were rushed to Civil Hospital, where doctors delayed the treatment, telling their relatives and fellow workers to wash ‘unclean’ bodies first.

"My brother died during the process of cleansing the filth from his body," Pervaiz Masih told media.

“Had doctors provided immediate medical support, my brother would have been alive,” he maintained.

On the complaint of Irfan Masih’s family, police lodged an FIR against six people, including three doctors.

MS Dr Jam Kunbhar has been arrested, according to police.

The police said that raids were being conducted to arrest the five remaining suspects. - SAMAA
