KARACHI: Four policemen were killed and two were injured in a drive-by shooting in Karachi on Friday, officials said.

The gun attack took place near Habib Bank Chowrangi in SITE area.

According to SP Site Nasir Aftab, four policemen including an ASI have embraced martyrdom in the shooting.

Four gunmen on two motorcycles opened indiscriminate fire on the police team during Iftar and sped away. The victims identified as ASI Muhammad Yousuf, Raja Shabir, Khalid and Israr were shot in the head and chest from a close range.

Senior police official Dr Jamil said that Site and its surrounding areas area a stronghold of the banned groups.

"It could be a calculated campaign in the country to demoralize Pakistanis and security agencies ahead of Eid ul Fitr," Dr Jamil said. "Due to lack of resources, we cannot deploy police everywhere in the city."

This is the third act of terrorism in the country today. In the first attack, at least 13 people were killed in Quetta in a car bomb blast.

Hours later, two suicide bombers struck a crowded market in Parachinar, the capital of Kurram Agency, killing 20 people and leaving scores of others injured. - SAMAA
