ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan Thursday suspended Sindh High Court’s daytime ban on movement of heavy vehicles in Karachi.

The SHC had in March directed Sindh transport secretary and Karachi traffic police chief to immediately enforce a ban on movement of heavy vehicles in the city during daytime after citizens complained of a worsening in the traffic flow on the main arteries of the metropolis.

The decision prompted goods transporters to go on strike for 10 days, arguing that the restriction was inflicting extra costs because their vehicles were having to cover longer distances at a stretch to reach their destinations on time.

According to our correspondent, a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar heard the petition moved by Karachi Port Trust (KPT), transporters and the Sindh government.

In its ruling, the bench observed that SHC’s decision is violation of Supreme Court’s Aug 2008 verdict. “Ban on traffic’s movement is violation of fundamental rights,” it said, noting that the ruling has paralyzed business activities.  – Samaa
