ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court of Pakistan Monday said the government has no license to destroy historic buildings.

Hearing a case regarding Orange Line train project, Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed said, “We will not let historic Shalamar Gardens to be destroyed.

Deciding to hold hearing of the case on daily basis, Justice Sheikh noted the city that has no mass transit is not a city at all.

“The country is awash with distrust and no institutions including the judiciary are trusted in the country. People are not willing to have trust even if angels land here,” he said.

“Is it mandatory for the train to pass over Chauburji? The beautiful scenery can be viewed from the road as well,” Justice Sheikh remarked.

He noted future of nations which preserve their past is safe, adding no definitive stance has been adopted over change in design of the project.

Responding to this, lawyer of Nespak said the change is perhaps possible but it will incur increased cost for the project.

“We have nothing to do with the cost of the project,” he added. –SAMAA
