KARACHI: Viewers in largest city of Pakistan were deprived of country’s most popular television channel, Samaa, on Friday as its transmission was shutdown in different parts of Karachi.

Reports received from across the city said the broadcast was closed by unknown people in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, F.B Area, North Nazimabad and North Karachi this afternoon.

The shutdown to unsuccessfully gag the voice of media came as Samaa was highlighting several issues of the city including protest demonstrations that are being staged by three political parties on different issues.

Samaa received hundreds of complaints from viewers through telephone calls and emails, expressing their anger and disappointment.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) Chairman, Absar Aalam, spoke to Samaa and vowed to take action against those involved in the closure of transmission.  – Samaa
